It's hard to believe that we are already halfway through winter here in the Northern hemisphere. Candlemas marks the cross quarter day when the light of the sun continues to grow as we leave the dark days of winter behind .. We are being born again into the light! Some cultures celebrate by lighting candles and placing them all over the house to signify the return of the sun. Here in the garden, many of the bulbs are starting to pop out of the ground and the roses are forming little red leaf buds, ready to sprout as soon as the days become warmer. This morning I spotted something yellow in the garden and lo'n behold, a bright sunny daffodill had blessed us with her early beauty! The light has returned!!!

It's a New Year and what an amazing year it will be! With so much changing on the Planet, whether we're speaking of climate change or the various social movements around the world in response to women's equality, racial equality, gender fluidity or the importance of new thinking in regards to Animal and Earth rights, all will find a bigger voice in 2019! It's only just begun, so let's create a bigger world with love. Here in the Northern hemisphere where I live, it's wintertime and the season to go inward and dream and plan for our own personal New Year. We can look to Mother Nature as she is doing the same thing as her plants and insects slowly return to the soil to nourish next year's growth. It's all connected and what is created - whether through us or through Nature, will become our future. So in the quiet days of winter dream well my fellow gardeners, as out of the womb of darkness comes the light of creation. And let that light shine!!!
The circle of the Sun has moved around again and here in the Northern Hemisphere we find ourselves at the shortest day of the year. The Winter Solstice is a special time when the candles are lit and maybe even a Yule Log which symbolize the return of the light after this longest night of Solstice. Here in the garden the days are short and nights are chilly, though we still have a single rose blooming in the garden. Her beauty is especially welcome this time of year and with it comes the hope of blooming days ahead. But for now we move into winter and the garden will rest and we will rest too... I wish you all a beautiful Solstice and we'll see you in the garden in 2019! What an amazing season it has been! Despite the adversity of heat, wind and smoke, the garden continued to shine for a good long season. We are truly blessed and now the garden can rest in Winter's silence. So here are the last splashes of the Fall season-enjoy!
My wish this year is a Planet of Peace. And, as always, the garden leads the way. Today I walked by the hummingbird feeder and glanced at the honeybees that are often there, feasting on sugar water. And today they were joined by Yellow Jacket wasps, often seen as an aggressor towards honeybees. But not today. Not in the garden. Today they are feasting at the feeder in peace ... Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
With much love, Marianne We've had a spectacular fall this year with an abundance of sunshine and many windless days. After having endured a hot, smokey summer, the beautiful weather has been such a joy, especially for the garden! Flowers are abundant in the cooler days while the green leafy vegetables are tender and sweet, happily growing under an autumn sun. Winter will be here soon enough, so we'll enjoy these final fall days in the garden. And for now, life is good...
It's the first of October and the days are noticeably cooler. The garden and I are both quite happy to put the summer heat behind us! The flowers are blooming in their final flush before winter while tomatoes are happily ripening on the vine. The runner bean flowers are growing into beans and the purple tomatillos are popping out of paper husks ready for picking. It's all about beauty and bounty in the garden this season so enjoy the wonderful days of autumn! Winter will be upon us soon enough...
The days are crisp and the skies are blue and the sun's rays are radiant in a clear autumn sky. Most of the fruit has been picked except for grapes ripening on the vine, while the vegetables are still going strong! Many of the garden flowers such as Salvias and Asters will shine with a fall bloom that will take us clear into winter. And the Runner Beans have created beautiful walls of color in the garden, which will soon grow into long pods awaiting a November harvest. The sweet season of fall is upon us and life is good.
The days are long and hot here in the Eastern Sierras. Even with the heat the garden is still shining with it's beautiful fruits and lovely flowers. The tomatoes should be ripening soon which is always a treat. Our "summer salsa" time has begun!
